(NYT17) NEW YORK -- Aug. 30, 2002 -- ADV. FOR SUN., SEPT. 1 -- AOL-INVESTIGATION-2 -- Three weeks ago, David M. Colburn, the chief deal maker at AOL Time Warner in charge of its business affairs department, was ousted after federal investigators and an internal inquiry by lawyers for the company began looking into the possibility that deals he negotiated may have inappropriately inflated the company's revenue. Now his departure has raised the question of whether investigators will stop at Colburn or turn their attention to the executives around and above him. J. Michael Kelly signed off on the accounting for all Colburn's major transactions as the chief financial officer of AOL before it acquired Time Warner and of the combined company afterward.
