(NYT4) NEW YORK -- Aug. 16, 2002 -- NY-NATURALIST -- Dr. Eleanor Sterling, 41, director of the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation, has an eclectic Ph.D. in forestry, environmental studies and anthropology, and came to science through the back door. Her father, a doctor in Davis, Calif., had taught her early to observe, hypothesize and test her theories. A sixth-grade teacher had encouraged her interest in nature and animals. But Sterling's two loves were classical music and foreign languages. (Chester Higgins Jr./The New York Times)
