(NYT26) LANGITAN, Indonesia -- Jan. 23, 2003 -- ISLAM-INDONESIA-2 -- As Washington ramps up for possible war against Iraq, the State Department is pursuing television and radio programming, newspaper advertising, videoconferences and specially tailored visits to the United States to show that America is not hostile to the interests of Islam. Abdulloh Munif, an assistant director at the Langitan Islamic School in Langitan, Indonesia, teaches a student in a class on Islamic thought, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003. Munif was one of 25 directors and teachers from traditional Islamic schools who traveled to the East Coast last September for a monthlong trip organized by the State Department to show skeptical Indonesian Muslims that America is a land of tolerance and diversity.
