(NYT27) AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Jan. 19, 2003 -- AUGUSTA-GOLF-4 -- Augusta is the Masters. And people in Augusta, Ga., seem to identify so strongly with the tournament that in the current dispute of the Augusta National Golf Club's men-only membership policy, the vast majority are backing Augusta National. Or keeping their thoughts to themselves. Augusta holds its Masters tournament in April. Lowell Greenbaum, chairman of the local Democratic Party, says he is bothered by the men-only policy. "On the one hand, we believe in equal rights for all and disagree strongly with Augusta National," says Dr. Greenbaum. "But on the other hand, we don't want to damage the club. It puts food on our tables." Greenbaum outside the Richmond County Democratic Party headquarters in downtown Augusta, Jan. 15, 2003. (Tami Chappell/The New York Times)
