(NYT37) BRADFORD, England -- Jan. 29, 2003 -- BRITAIN-SUPERMARKETS-2 -- Shopping at the Morrisons supermarket in Bradford, England, Jan. 9, 2003. Sir Kenneth Morrison, the chairman of William Morrison Supermarkets, is trying to turn the underdog position to his advantage, arguing that a Safeway-Morrison merger, combining Britain's No. 4 and No. 5 chains, would create a stronger competitor to the big three -- in descending order, Tesco, J. Sainsbury and the Asda unit of Wal-Mart Stores. All have said they are considering making rival bids.(Jonathan Player/The New York Times)
