(NYT36) NEW DELHI -- Jan. 28, 2003 -- INDIA-SUBWAY-2 -- New Delhi's new $2-billion subway system, barely more than a month old, is altering Indians' view of themselves and their capital. The success of the project, built with Japanese aid money, has become a striking symbol of change in India. Hundreds of thousands of people take what they literally call "joyrides,'' short trips to savor the efficiency, modernity and sense of progress the new system seems to generate. In New Delhi, a woman views a map of the Metro system, posted while it was under construction on Dec. 19, 2002. (Amit Bhargava/The New York Times)
