(NYT54) NEW YORK -- Feb. 21, 2003 -- COLUMBIA-JOURNALISM -- Lee C. Bollinger's aim was keen and his angle well considered. As one of his first acts as president of Columbia University, he declared the curriculum at the heart of the Graduate School of Journalism "insufficient.'' Bollinger's message on July 23 sent a collection of faculty members and alumni ricocheting off one other in anger and confusion. Within weeks, journalists from Canada to South Africa, some proud that they had never taken a journalism course, were arguing about what academic training reporters need, if any. Samuel G. Freedman, interim associate dean of Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism, and other faculty members credit Bollinger with promoting discussion about the school.
