(NYT45) NEWARK, N.J. -- Feb. 19, 2003 -- DOG-ICE-RESCUE -- It was a strange sight, out of a Jack London novel or a "Lassie" episode: a dog adrift on an ice floe, swiftly moving down the Passaic River. As such it drew an audience: gawkers driving along the shore on Route 21, emergency workers on the riverbanks, helicopters overhead and television viewers at home who were glued to the scene Wednesday morning, Feb. 19, 2003, as police officers in an inflatable boat tried in vain to reach the dog. Then, after three hours, the drama delivered a movie-perfect, tail-wagging denouement, as a fire captain and a Humane Society worker arrived in a rowboat, lassoed the frightened animal and pulled it aboard. A rescue worker, above, holds the dog aboard the rescue boat, as another warms up the canine, below, in Newark. (Keith Meyers/The New York Times) *LITE
