(NYT23) ORGUN, Afghanistan -- Jan. 24, 2003 -- AFGHAN-ARMY-4 -- Armed with Kalashnikov rifles and Russian-style helmets, the Afghan soldiers patrolling either side of the street of the main bazaar in Orgun, Afghanistan, are part of the Third Battalion of the new Afghan National Army, the first to be deployed on active duty outside Kabul. Down here in the farthest corner of Paktika province in southeastern Afghanistan, close to the Pakistani border, they are a stunning novelty for both the local people and the U.S. forces who share a camp with them, just outside of town. Members of the Third Battalion of the Afghan National Army patrol in the town of Orgun, in eastern Afghanistan, Jan. 19, 2003. (Carlotta Gall/The New York Times) *LITE
