(NYT49) SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Jan. 23, 2003 -- FBN-SUPER-CITY-3 -- John Lynch, a safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, played high school football in San Diego, long before he made it to the National Football League and before he returned to San Diego this week, as a star player appearing in the Super Bowl for the first time. Lynch was raised in affluence in the northernmost section of San Diego, an area where many white, well-to-do families have settled. Lynch attended Torrey Pines High School, with its lush nine-and-a-half-acre campus and stunning athletic fields, created through the fund-raising of an energetic boosters club. Students at Torrey Pines High School, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003. (Barton Silverman/The New York Times)
