(NYT37) NEW YORK -- Jan. 19, 2003 -- NY-100-YEAR-OLDS-2 -- In this aging world, living to 100 has become less elusive than it used to be. Although small in number, centenarians are proportionately New York's, fastest-growing age bracket, and the country's too. As it happens, the oldest New Yorkers remain among the least visible. Many live in nursing homes and suffer from dementia and other debilitating conditions, leaving them heavily reliant on others. A fair number, though, are clearheaded and robust, and continue to live in their own homes, with a spirited outlook. Chaim Stobnick, age 100, said: "I don't look it, do i? People tell me all the time. They think I'm 80." Stobnick in his New York apartment, on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003. (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
