(NYT31) DANBURY, Conn. -- Jan. 17, 2003 -- Adv. for Sun., Jan. 19 -- ECON-DEFLATION-2 -- For some of the nation's largest industries -- telecommunications, airlines, apparel, fast food, autos, and PCs -- deflation is a reality, not a threat. And it is causing incredible problems for them, and the economy -- damping down employment, for one thing. Few expect deflation to spread throughout the economy, but in recent weeks even the Federal Reserve has said it is worried enough to pump more money out and continue to cut rates. Since 2000, Ethan Allen, based in Danbury, Conn., has also cut its work force about 5 percent, to 10,000, while its sales have risen slightly. It operates 17 factories, compared with 27 a decade ago. M. Farooq Kathwari, Ethan Allen's chief executive in Danbury, Conn., in July 1998. (Librado Romero/The New York Times)
