(NYT31) GUANGZHOU, China -- Jan. 13, 2003 -- CHINA-AIDS -- Although China has strict laws prohibiting discrimination against people with AIDS or HIV, many patients identify the intense stigma -- not the illness -- as their No. 1 problem. But for every national law prohibiting discrimination there is a local ordinance that, for example, prevents people with HIV from marrying freely or using public swimming pools. Seven people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, in the group apartment they have secretly rented on the outskirts of Guangzhou, China.
