(NYT20) UNDATED -- Jan. 11, 2003 -- NY-REPUBS-CONVENTION -- Odd as it may seem, Republican officials say this city was an easy choice for the site of the Republican National Convention. After all, the city, which the Republican Party designated on Monday as its host for 2004, served as the backdrop for one of the most dramatic moments so far in the presidency of George W. Bush, and continues to resonate with many Americans as the emotional center of a nation at war. But while New York has much to gain from a major political convention -- thousands of tourists spending millions of dollars, according to city projections, and televised images of the city luring others into its midst -- the extent to which it helps the ascendant Republican leaders who pushed for it so hard is an entirely different question.
