(NYT20) FORT LEE, N.J. -- Jan. 10, 2003 -- SONY-APPOINT -- The Sony Corp. of America announced Friday it had appointed an outsider, Andrew Lack, the executive who rebuilt the NBC News division, to help save its faltering music operation. Many in the music industry said they were surprised by the selection of Lack, the president and chief operating officer of NBC, who has no background in the music business. He replaces Tommy Mottola, one of the most powerful figures in the music industry for at least a decade, who was forced out as chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment on Thursday.
