(NYT20) HILLSBOROUGH, Calif. -- Jan. 5, 2003 -- WEST-ECON-2 -- California's is a tale of two economies. Southern California is faring relatively well, with unemployment below the national average, personal income growth outpacing the nation and military contractors riding a wave of new Pentagon and domestic security spending. But the San Francisco Bay Area remains mired in a technology slump, with analysts worried that it could be years before the next new thing revitalizes Silicon Valley. Jerry Kaplan, an Internet pioneer in the San Francisco area says he made $500 million and then lost most of it when the dot-com bubble burst. "I like to joke that I used to be retired," he says. "Now I'm just unemployed." Kaplan at his home in Hillsborough, Calif., Dec. 26, 2002, says he has been out of work since 2001. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
