(NYT24) JERUSALEM -- Jan. 2, 2003 -- ISRAEL-POISONGAS -- Training in dealing with poison gas is now unfolding in 3,000 schools across Israel and is one of the many efforts to prepare for a gas attack in the event of a U.S. invasion of Iraq. As a possible war in the gulf looms larger, so do memories in Jerusalem, at least among adults, of the 39 Iraqi Scud missiles that landed there during the Persian Gulf war in 1991. There was no poison gas in the missiles then, but the betting this time is that the chances for such an attack, if Saddam Hussein is cornered, could be far greater. A soldier explains to a class in Jerusalem how to put on a gas mask on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003. (Rina Castelnuovo/The New York Times)*LITE*
