(NYT20) SUKHPAR, India -- Feb. 5, 2001 -- INDIA-EARTHQUAKE-2 -- Nobody knows how many tens of thousands died in the earthquake that devastated India's Kutch peninsula 11 days ago, but this much is certain: Many were children, and many boys and girls who survived were left as orphans. An Indian mother bathes her child in the open-air outside a Japanese Red Cross field hospital. Sukhpar, five miles from Bhuj, the town closest to the epicenter of the earthquake, was largely destroyed in the 'quake, and most of its residents now live on open ground. (John F.
