Image taken from The Akbarnama (Book of Akbar), the official chronicle of the reign of Akbar commissioned by Akbar himself by his court historian and biographer, Abul Fazl who was one of the nine jewels in Akbar's court. It includes vivid and detailed descriptions of his life and times. Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (1542-1605) Under his rule India enjoyed much cultural and economic progress as well as religious harmony. Akbar was a successful warrior; he also forged marital alliances with several Hindu Rajput kingdoms. Some Rajput kingdoms continued to pose a significant threat to Mughal dominance of northwestern India, but they were subdued by Akbar. He was a great patron of art and architecture He took a great interest in painting, and had the walls of his palaces adorned with murals. Besides encouraging the development of the Mughal school, he also patronized the European style of painting. Akbar was known as one of the most tolerant rulers. He abolished a tax on the Hindu population and encouraged artists to combine Hindu and Islamic styles in their work.In 1605, Akbar fell ill with an attack of dysentery, from which he never recovered.
