Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single fungiform papilla from the human tongue. The tongue is covered in numerous tiny projections, called papillae, which vary in shape, size and color. Fungiform papillae possess a good blood supply. They are large enough to be seen as small red dots when one examines one's tongue in a mirror. The small crater at the center of this papilla is a "taste pore, " which gives access to the pit of the taste bud. Mag., x1100 at 3/4 inches.
