Light micrograph of Volvox globator. Volvox can be classified either with the green algae (plants) or flagellates (animals). The colony is a large hollow sphere made up of thousands of cells. The cells are arranged in a single layer at the surface of the sphere and connected by fine cytoplasmic threads. Each cell has two flagella which point outwards. Volvox reproduce asexually & sexually. Asexual reproduction involves the colony splitting into a parent and daughter colony. Magnification: x75 at 35mm size.
