Rwanda, Karongi District, 25 January 2014 Beatrice Mukandori, 63, in her home. From her last harvest the One Acre Fund innovations team measured 25 square meters of her maize, and weighted the harvest from that land. From that land, she harvested 31 kgs of maize. They say: "It is a good harvest for this size. Beatrice's harvest is really good compared to others we've seen." Beatrice: "Before I could only harvest 20 kgs on 3 ares of land." (100 ???ares = one hectare). She estimates she will harvest 3 90-kg sacks of maize from this harvest. "I will not sell right now because at the market, the price is cheap. I expect to wait five months to sell when the price is higher." She says she now makes 30,000 Rwandan Francs/growing season (Rwanda has 2). Before she used to sell bananas for money. "When we'd like to get money, we had bananas so we could sell those, but it was never much." "Really One Acre Fund has improved my life. I purchased a phone, a cow and also a goat. I also pay for school fees for my children, pay health insurance and purchased gloves. Before I couldn't do this. I only harvested enough to eat, and it would not last long??S Before joined One Acre Fund, I would eat few, but now I am satisfied??S This program has really changed my life because before I needed to buy clothes, but I couldn't. Now today, when I sell my maize, I can now buy myself meat. I only could eat meat at Christmas and at the New Year before. Now I can eat meat two times per month??S Before One Acre Fund, I used to mix seeds, but now I plant in lines. Before I used to plant maize with beans, but now I separate them. Before I would use manure only, but now that I have joined One Acre Fund, I get chemical fertilizer, which I mix with manure." Beatrice has 7 children and 7 grandchildren.
