Mozambique, Zambezia, 14 May 2013 Pires Antonio, (44) at home with his children Morne Pires (8), Luc Pires (9). Pires had a two hectare farm before Hoyo Hoyo took it in 2012. He was to receive M1500 for one hectare as compensation and a one hectare plot of land elsewhere. He received the money but not the lanfd. ??sI used that money in one week because I had to pay school fees??? ??sHoyo Hoyo didn???t give me choice to stay or go. I just had to go.??? ??sI was growing a hectare of maize and another of soya beans.??? Pires was working for Capel who offered him the land when they left. He was on the land since 1996. ??sBefore Hoyo Hoyo life was so good because of that farm. I made a business, but since Hoyo Hoyo took the land I have no way to live. I feel like Hoyo Hoyo stopped my life.??? Hoyo Hoyo, a Portuguese owned agribusiness, moved onto land in Ruasse, Gurue, Zambezia cleared some years ago by local people. They came with permission from the government and with promises of money, jobs, and facilities for the local people. Many farmers, some willingly, others under protest, lost their lands. The compensation for the land, for many, was never or only partly delivered. Hoyo Hoyo now grows soy beans ploughing the land and processing the crop with large farm machinery. Just across the road from the large farm in the villages of Liberdade and Sede-Nova, the former farmers live in poverty, many must now work on other farmers land as labourers. Robin Hammond / NOOR
