(NYT13) TAOS, N.M. -- May 9, 2002 -- HIKING-TAOS-3 -- Choosing a hike in the mountains around Taos, N.M. requires little science. You can use "adventure dowsing": close your eyes and poke your finger down on a trail map, and odds are the route you pick will wind past pinyon, black bears, and blood-orange Indian paintbrush, through cool alpine meadows or dusky, high-desert low county. The landscape is ineffably lovely. Judah Botzer, a resident of Taos, N.M., and his dogs make their way down the Williams Lake Trail following a late afternoon visit to Alpine Lake in Taos. The two hour round trip hike is popular with locals. (Richard Scibelli/The New York Times)
