Gilbert Urdialez III, 31, of East LA, wipes away tears with a bandana as Father Gregory Boyle gives him a blessing in his office at the Homeboy Industries headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. Urdialez, of the 18th Street gang and a third generation gang member, was busted for murder at the age of 13. Father Boyle came to him while he was in solitary confinement in juvenile detention and returned multiple times despite the fact that Urdialez recalled he gave the priest a less-than pleasant reception. His case was dismissed and he has felt a strong affinity for Father Boyle ever since. "His blessing means the world to me," he said. "I don't know what to do without it. I do have a crazy story and I'm lucky to be alive." Homeboy Industries, founded and helmed by Father Boyle, provides a myriad of services to area ex-convicts seeking to turn their lives around.
