Holocaust survivor Pedro Buchwald (R), 87, talks next to his daughter Monica (C) and wife Alba during an interview with AFP in Buenos Aires on December 26, 2024. Buchwald was born in Varazdin, Croatia (former Yugoslavia), on May 17, 1937, and was deported with his parents to the Gospic concentration camp in 1941. During a march to the Jasenovac concentration camp in mid-1942, his father asked him to shout out that he had to pee, as an excuse to escape with his parents. With the help of partisans and an Italian soldier's uniform, he moved to Italy in 1942. There he went to a fascist school. On several occasions, Germany asked the Italian army to shoot his father, but they never did. They later traveled to Spain in early 1943 in a German three-engine plane, a Junkers Ju 52, on loan to the Italian Air Force. His family traveled with Italian troops and survived after two British Spitfires strafed the plane, forcing an emergency landing in a field in Spain, where they were assisted by Franco supporters until they finally embarked in Cadiz on the ship “Cabo de Buena Esperanza” to arrive in October 1943 in Argentina. He has a daughter, a son, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. (Photo by JUAN MABROMATA / AFP)
