Lotengena Samaki (12) herds the family’s sheep and goats from their boma overlooking the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in Lake Natron, Tanzania, on March 7, 2024. Lotengena will spend the rest of the day herding the sheep and goats in search of good grazing pasture.
Known by the Maasai as “the Mountain of God,” this active volcano is part of the East African Rift and produces a sodium and potassium rich lava that is silver in color. The Tanzanian government plans to extend the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and wildlife corridor to bordering villages in Ngorongoro, Longido and Moduli districts, which would forcibly displace communities like this from their homes.
