A photo taken 19 May 1981 shows Pope John Paul II sitting in his bed at the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome after he was wounded in St Peter's square by his would-be assassin Mehemet Ali Agca on 13 May 1981. Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turk, shot and wounded John Paul II, hitting him in the abdomen. He is due to be freed from jail in Istanbul, 12 january 2006.
