Pope John Paul II greets former Polish President Lech Walesa (L), accompanied by his wife Danuta and his youngest daughter Brigida (background) in the Chapel of the Black Madonna at the Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa 04 June 1997. The Pope was on an 11-day visit to his native Poland. John Paul II, the former Cardinal Karol Wojtyla became 16 October 1978 the first non-Italian Pope since Adrian VI of Holland IN 1542.
