Historie znad Mekongu - Vu Images
China, Yunnan, June 29, 2009 Making the River navigable: economic stakes, but at what cost? Upstream of Cizhong, the Mekong's course is turbulent. Where there is no bridge, a cable and a pulley will do for crossing over. Women and men use this passageway; loads of wood and animals are transported this way as well. Further downstream, navigation becomes the main issue for economic exchanges and tourism. The Mekong is only navigable over some 186 miles (300 km). Dynamiting and demolition works have been engaged in order to enlarge and deepen the riverbed. The negative impact on the ecosystem and the inhabitants' subsistence raise serious concerns. The large boats are also source of significant pollution and modifications to the flow that might contribute to the erosion of the riverside. Lam Duc Hien / Agence V
