East Africa's first state pension is changing lives. A year after the lives of Zanzibar's elderly were transformed by the introduction of pensions for people aged 70 or over - a first for east Africa - the benefits for the semi-autonomous region of Tanzania are plain to see. Yusuf, who is 72 years old, poses for a photograph with some fresh mangoes he has just bought at his home in Stone Town Zanzibar, Tanzania Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Yusuf is one of the first people who received the social pension when it was introduced last year. He is a retired chemistry teacher who also receives a pension from the Ministry of Education. For him the pension is helpful for months when money is tight, but he adds: "[The social pension] makes a very big difference to other older people who run their own business or who build their homes bit-by-bit."Zanzibar is the first place in East Africa to give a State pension to everyone over the age of 70. ?
