PHOTO: EAST NEWS/AFP PHOTO Wladyslaw Gomulka (L), Premier Secretary of Polish Communist Party (CP), and his friend Yugoslav President Marshal Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980), smile 10 September 1957 upon Polish leader arrival to Belgrade. Gomulka (1905-82), a professional trade unionist, became in 1943 secretary of the outlawed CP and was vice-president of the first postwar Polish government (1945-8). Gomulka's his criticism of the Soviet Union led to his arrest and imprisonment (1951-4). He returned to power as party first secretary in 1956 but 1971, following a political crisis, he resigned office.
