Thousands of demonstrators, waving national flags and shouting "Syria Out," rally in downtown Beirut late 27 February 2005 after opposition movements vowed to defy a ban on public demonstrations. Thousands of youngsters carrying the Lebanese flag were converging on Martyrs' Square, as hundreds of heavily armed troops were deploying with jeeps and trucks at all the main crossroads leading to the square. Opposition sit-ins have been held nightly for the 12 days since the assassination of five-time prime minister Rafiq Hariri, a strong Damascus critic. Arabic writing on red banner reads: "Independence 2005." AFP PHOTO/RAMZI HAIDAR
