An unidentified scientist keeps an eye on the panels and computers controlling the environment in Lenin's tomb on Red Square April 16, 1997, six days before the 127th April 22 birthday of the Soviet founder. In order to keep the mummified body of Vladimir Lenin in good condition, the room where he lays is kept at 61 degrees Fahrenheit and has a sophisticated lighting system. Lenin's body was put on display after his death in 1924 in a wooden mausolem which was replaced by a granite one in 1930. Russian politicans have sparred over whether the proletarian leader should receive a proper burial. The controversy, which originally flared during the decline of the communist regime, was reopened by President Boris Yeltsin in March when he suggested that Lenin's remains should be buried in St. Petersburg alongside his mother.
