Croatia, Osijek, 13 November 2017 53 year old Darko Kovacic has been living at ???Center For Providing Services In The Community??? in Osijek, Croatia since 2011. Before his time at the center he was in private institutions since his he was about 11 years old. Darko doesn???t know name of his mental health problem but describes not being able to cope after his parents died when he was a child and knowing that at least in the psychiatric institution his basic needs were sufficiently taken care of. Darko has seen the Center For Providing Services In The Community transform in his time here. In 2012 the director, Ladislav Lamza, changed the sign on the front of their building from ???Home for mentally ill adults??? to ???Center for Providing Service in the Community - I am just like you.??? ??sIt was very positive move,??? says Darko. ??sIt removed the prejudice. The last sign said that we were crazy people ??" it was not correct. We are not marked by this ugly name now. I feel equal, I am no longer ashamed by the name of the institution.??? Darko credits Ladislav for changing his life and the lives of many of the beneficiaries of the center: ??sWithout Ladislav my life would be different. He helped us. He is a man with a soul. A heart for everyone.??? The center is helping Darko buy his own house from the proceeds of the sale of his mother???s house (she is deceased) in Zagreb. ??sI???ll be happy to live alone as long as I have the care and contact of the center??? he says.
