Croatia, Osijek, 14 November 2017 51 year old Jadranka Butkovic worked for 22 years as a hairdresser in institution for adults living with mental health problems in the village of Cepin and city of Osijek, Croatia. She describes life there: ??sThe beneficiaries could not make any of their own decisions, they couldn???t decide what to eat, when to bathe, when to go out. It was almost like being in a prison.??? She describes her work there: ??sWhen I was in the institution I had so many people to look after. I was hairdressing and also a barber. My only duty was to cut their hair. I didn???t speak to them much, they were in the chair for just a few minutes. They all used to queue to have their hair cut, I???d do my job, it was almost like a factory. It was routine. The people became like objects.??? In 2012 the ???Home for mentally ill adults??? where she worked in Osijek changed to ???Center for Providing Service in the Community - I am just like you??? and started implementing a program to move beneficiaries from the institution to supported living in the community. Jadranka stopped working in the institution as a hairdresser and became an assistant working in the community. ??sAt the beginning I was a bit afraid of the beneficiaries. I was to be all alone with them, in one apartment, and I was responsible for their lives: I was frightened for their lives and my own.??? Four years later things have changed for Jadranka: ??sNow that I am working and living with them, they are no longer objects, they are now my friends, nobody has ever been aggressive towards me, we are just friends. I spend more time with them than I do with my own family. I know everything about them.??? She adds: ??sI share everything with them about my family, about my grandchildren. We got to know each other much better. We celebrate their birthdays and prepare cakes, they each have their own birthday celebration, which wasn???t the case in the institution.???
