Croatia, Osijek, 14 November 2017 38 year old Slavica Hip lived in Cepin Home for Adults with Mental Health Problems for 10 years. 75 year old Erna Muller spent 26 years in institutions for adults with mental health problems. Both moved into and apartment in the Croatian city of Osijek in 2014 as part of deinstitutionalization program led by the director of the ???Center For Providing Services In The Community,??? Ladislav Lamza. Slavica lives with her boyfriend in the apartment in Osijek. Talking about her boyfriend she says ??she is very kind and nice.??? She is currently using an exercise bicycle to try to loose weight. Former beneficiaries who lived with her in the institution say she has put on a lot of weight since moving into the apartment ??" ??sthe food is much better here??? says one of her flat mates. Comparing life in the apartment with the institution Slavica says: ??sIt is better here in the apartment compared to the institution. I get up when I want. I can sleep longer. I can listen to music in my bedroom. It???s peaceful. I can walk a lot around the house in Summer. The worst thing about the institution is people would steal clothes from my wardrobe and my make up.??? Speaking about her therapy she says ??sIn the institution I would take more pills. Now my medication has been reduced. I feel better.??? 75 year old Erna, talking about life now, says ??sIt???s almost perfect here. The food is much better, there is no stealing. Sometimes there is a little quarrel especially at the beginning, but time has past by we???ve become better friends and now there are almost no quarrels.??? ??sin the institution we just had to be satisfied with what we were given to eat, we had no choice.
