L3m nuclear bunker home. The Glasshouse, a converted former nuclear bunker in Chislehurst, South-East London including the UK's largest conservatory. The former nuclear bunker has been transformed into a stunning mansion. When the Cold War intensified in 1951, the UK government built secret bunkers from where its officials could run the country in the event of a nuclear attack. This Regional Control Centre in Kemnal Road was one of four in the London group, and was fully equipped with showers, food, water and fuel stores. There was a map room, dormitory and diesel generators which powered the electrical, communication and air filtration systems. The Chislehurst bunker was eventually abandoned, but the site was bought in 1998 to convert it into a luxury home. Two years of reinvention and reconstruction commenced with windows and doors carved out of the formidable concrete walls, a central swimming pool was built with all the living accommodation around it, and an atrium style opening glass roof above from which The Glass House obtained its name.
