A pregnant Egyptian woman, whose mummy is in the collection of the University of Warsaw, likely died of cancer, according to researchers.
They believe the presence of the disease is indicated by unusual traces of bones in her skull. Scientists hope that mummy analysis may contribute to the development of modern oncology.
A pathological change in the right eye orbit was observed by Marzena Ożarek-Szilke - an anthropologist and archaeologist from the Department of Oncology Faculty Medicine of the Medical University of Warsaw (DO FM MUW), who is co-directing the Warsaw Mummy Project with Wojciech Ejsmond from the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. Rafał Stec from the DO FM MUW, further indicated that the Egyptian woman may have suffered from nasopharyngeal cancer.
A histopathological examination is necessary to fully confirm cancer, but the observed changes in bones make it very likely. Scientists plan to take tissue samples and determine the cause of the disease. The data will then be compared with those from other cancer samples found in Egyptian mummies.
Researchers hope that the results of further analysis of the mummy could be a valuable source for oncologists. Marzena Ożarek-Szilke and Rafał Stec explained this will determine the “molecular signature” of cancer that can be compared with current cancers. This knowledge may provide researchers with valuable information on the evolution of cancer and may indicate further research directions in both cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The mummy was donated to the University of Warsaw in 1826 and was initially considered to be a woman. In the 1920s and 1960s, Egyptologists read hieroglyphic and Demotic inscriptions on the coffin and cartonnage that informs that they were made for male priest Hor-Djehuty, who lived in Thebes in the 1st century BCE. It was subsequently thought that the mummy inside was his body. Scientists from the Warsaw Mummy Project established that the mummy was a woman, and it was further established that she was pregnant, which is the first published case of a pregnant ancient Egyptian mummy.
The Warsaw Mummy Project team consists of leading international experts who are studying the body dubbed the Mysterious Lady, due to the many secrets that she still bears. Her name and many other facts regarding her life are still unknown.
