This Austin K5 was a British heavy military truck built 80-years ago by Austin for use during the Second World War. This truck was only produced by the UK during World War II during 1942 until 1945 and was used to tow artillery in the British North African campaign against Germany. The key conflict in this campaign was at the Battle of Alamein in October to November 1942, where Britain successfully turned back Germany’s advance into Egypt, which was the nation’s first great victory in WW2 according to wartime leader Winston Churchill. The K5 was used with an open body and cab for carrying the Ordnance QF 6 pounder anti-tank gun portee in the North African Campaign or with an enclosed cab for General Service (GS). Austin K5’s enclosed body versions were used for salvage and rescue work in the UK. It was nicknamed the "Screamer" because of a noisy transfer case, with just over 12,000 produced, nearly all of which have since been destroyed.
