A large formation of Flying Fortresses of the U.S. Army 8th Air Force attacked a mammoth aircraft factory on a bend of the Danube River near the Austrian border at Regensburg, Aug. 17, 1943. Many German fighter planes were destroyed on the ground and 140 were shot down. Twenty-three Fortresses were reported missing but at least four of the crews are known to be safe. (AP Photo)
