BARBARA GREEN WITH CHURCHILL 89TH BIRTHDAY CAKE IN LONDON / ;
29 NOVEMBER 1963LONDON, ENGLAND, COLOURISED IMAGES of ornate cakes baked to celebrate Sir Winston Churchill's birthday over the years have been released in anticipation of his 150th birthday.
Images show a showstopper cake made for Mr Churchill’s 86th birthday depicting a cornucopia overflowing with the prime minister's favourite things, including his iconic hat, cigar and bottles of booze.
In addition, the 1946, "architect of victory" 72nd birthday cake is pictured which tells the career history of Mr Churchill through models of his various hats. Adorning the peak of the spiral sponge is a top hat raised on a stick to represent London Victory Day on 6th June 1946.
Another baked for Churchill’s 78th birthday in 1952 for bears the wording, 'Whilst the earth is dressed in solemn white. A distant bird may start to sing. In peace, with your counsel, your strength in the fight, guide us toward a newer spring.
Also pictured is a light fruit cake decorated with the words "We Have Now at Once to Promote the Cause of United Europe," which was baked for his 88th birthday.
The images were colourised by Tom Marshall in preparation for Churchill’s 150th birthday on 30th November 2024.
Sir Winston Churchill's birthday cakes were a popular attraction for the press and public, designed to showcase his career and achievements.
Many of the sponge and icing cakes were made by Hungarian pastry chef Maria Floris, who gained celebrity status through the baking of these epic cakes. She was the go-to baker for the Royal family and people in High Society.
There was so much interest in these annual cakes the bakery was known on occasion to hold a press call to allow journalists to view the cakes before sending them off to Mr Churchill
The cakes were often displayed at Mr Churchill's home at Chartwell where photographers would be invited to come and take pictures of the celebratory sponge cakes.
