In a photo provided by Nasa, John Young salutes the U.S. flag on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission in April 1972. Young, who went on to command the first shuttle mission in 1981 during a four-decade career at the space agency, died at home in Houston on Jan. 5, 2018. He was 87. (Charles M.
