Mandatory Credit: Photo by C T Auctions/Bournemouth News/Shutterstock (13046428a) Four toy clown cars that had to be kept in a cupboard as their child owner was scared of them and were unearthed after 40 years have sold for Ł60,000. The bizarre set of three-wheeled tinplate cars with circus entertainers in their carriages were an Edwardian novelty. They were made in 1909 by German manufacturer Marklin. The vendor's late mother bought them at a north of England flea market for her as a young child in the 1970s. But she was scared of the clowns so the mother put them away. They remained in storage at the mother's Manchester home until her death two years ago. The vendor, now aged in her 50s, found the toys while clearing out the property and did some online research on them. She was shocked to discover their rarity and contacted C&T Auctions, of Ashford, Kent, who have sold them for an impressive sum.
