The 738-foot Malaysian cargo ship Selendang Ayu, split in two in high seas and gale-force winds, sits offshore of Skan Bay on Unalaska Island near Unalaska, Alaska, in the Aleutian Island chain, Dec. 11, 2004. Six crew members died when a rescue helicopter that had picked them up was overcome by waves. As global warming reduces the extent of sea ice in the Arctic, more ships will be plying waters farther north, which raises concerns about ship safety.
