Portrait dated probably in December 1911 in Shanghai of Dr Sun Yat-sen, the republican leader of the Chinese revolution. He was elected 29 December 1911 in Shanghai the first President of the Chinese Republic. Sun Yixian or Sun Yat-sen, originally Sun Wen (1866-1925), a founder and early leader of China's Nationalist Party, was born in Xiangshan, Guangdong, China. He studied in Hawai and in Hong Kong, where he trained as a doctor. Alarmed by the weakness and decay of China, he founded the Alliance Society (1905) and helped to organize risings in South China. In 1912, Sun Yat-sen founded the Guomindang, based on his Three People's Principles of nationalism, democracy, and economic reform.The civil war ensued in 1913 and he set up a separate government at Guangzhou (Canton). At his death he was widely accepted as the true founder of the nation.
