America and the whole world wept in a clear morning in January 28 as what seemed like a routine launch in America's space programme was transformed into tragedy as the space shuttle "Challenger" carrying seven crew members, including 33-year-old school teacher Christa Macauliffe, exploded 75 seconds after lift-off, setting the country's space programme back at least two years and putting future manned flights into doubt. Cap Canaveral, Florida, USA - 28/01/1986.
