Mandatory Credit: Photo by NASA/REX (3683574a) (22 April 1969) Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, wearing an Extravehicular Mobility Unit, participates in a simulation of deploying and using lunar tools on the surface of the moon during a training exercise in Building 9 on April 22, 1969. Armstrong is the commander of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. In the background is a Lunar Module mock-up. Fascinating Images Show First Men On Moon Practicing On Fake Lunar Surface These fascinating images might do little to dispel conspiracy theories that the 1969 moon landing was faked. They feature Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin carrying out tasks on a clearly simulated lunar surface. While the astronauts practice manoeuvres, including collecting soil samples, men in shirts and ties can be seen in the background casually observing the scene. In fact, these are real training simulations carried out in Houston three months before the actually set foot on the moon. The practice sessions were carried out over a number of days in April 1969 in Building 9 of the Texas-based U.S. space agency facility. The two members of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission participated in a simulation of deploying and using lunar tools. They worked on a dusty grey surface similar to what they would soon find on the moon. In a couple of the pictures they leave the iconic spacesuit footprints we know from real mission images. Buzz Aldrin, the lunar module pilot, uses a scoop to pick up a sample while Neil Armstrong, Apollo 11 commander, holds bag to receive the sample. Both crew members are wearing Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMU), while in the background a Lunar Module (LM) mock-up can be seen. Another image unearthed by tech website Gizmodo shows Buzz simulating deployment of the Solar Wind Composition (SWC) experiment, on the surface of the moon. The SWC consisted ...
