Cicadas also make for popular snack food among other animals and some humans. The emergence of the 17 year Brood X cicada is seen and heard this summer across the eastern United States. Cicadas live underground for 17 years before emerging from the ground for a two week period when they shed their skin, sprout wings and the males sing to attract mates. After the females lay eggs in trees the cicadas die.
