Three German civilians, the first war criminals to be tried in Germany, were hanged at dawn on June 29, 1945 at the military prison at Rheinbach. All three were, found guilty of the murder of an American Airman who parachuted to earth from his blazing bomber on August 15. The three men, Peter Black, a cripple and Rural leader of the Nazi Party, Peter Kohn, one-armed German war veteran and Mathias Gierens, were defended by an experienced German lawyer. Evidence was given by a villager who witnessed the crime. A fourth German involved in the murder was sentenced to life imprisonment. Mathias Gierens plunges to his death. (AP Photo)
